Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their homes. After they have located some area schools, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered also. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final selection. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Job of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are many jobs that they can perform within the Gassaway WV veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the conventional vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Gassaway WV. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared to assistants and typically acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Gassaway WV area research facilities also.

Vet Online Schools

Since the classes are made available over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Gassaway WV veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for commuting and study supplies, can be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Colleges

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in West Virginia and across the Country, you must ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many potential students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other important qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to select a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Gassaway WV vet technician and assistant schools that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the vet tech or assistant school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Gassaway WV vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the West Virginia school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Gassaway WV vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to get practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local Gassaway WV veterinary community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A low rate might indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might indicate that the Gassaway WV program has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Gassaway WV programs you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet technician classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Gassaway WV campus is located in or near a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the West Virginia vet schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Gassaway WV prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies. You may discover that an online school is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Gassaway WV

Gassaway, West Virginia

Gassaway is a town in Braxton County, West Virginia, in the United States. The population was 908 at the 2010 census. Gassaway was incorporated in 1905 and named for Henry Gassaway Davis, the Democratic Party's nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1904.[6] The center of population of West Virginia is located approximately 7 miles (11 km) north of Gassaway.[7]

The town was originally created at the ends of two divisions of the Coal and Coke Railway, one originating in Charleston and the other originating in Elkins. Because of its central location, the area was an ideal place to build shops to facilitate the transition between the relatively flat Charleston division, which could operate with standard equipment, and the more hilly Elkins division of the Coal & Coke which required heavier engines. The town was laid out in 1904, and over the next decade, businesses and infrastructure such as hotels, a bank, stores, schools, a hospital, office buildings and churches appeared to serve the growing population. By 1915, the Coal & Coke Railway Company had completed work on a depot to facilitate passenger service to the town.[8] The Gassaway Depot still stands today and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.[9]

Gassaway is located at 38°40′15″N 80°46′13″W / 38.67083°N 80.77028°W / 38.67083; -80.77028 (38.670712, -80.770413),[10] along the Elk River.[11]
