After all, you have to search for and enroll in a college that will deliver the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and contrasting schools so that you can make the best choice? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are close to their residences. After they have located some local colleges, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate selection. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the varied roles of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many functions that they can carry out within the Whittier AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Whittier AK. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared to assistants and typically earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially perform the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Whittier AK area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Schools

attending vet tech school online in Whittier AKAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using various venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Whittier AK veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for traveling and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Alaska as well as across the USA, you must ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other essential qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Whittier AK veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet assistant or tech school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a requirement for employment for many Whittier AK veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final recommendation, get in touch with some Whittier AK veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local Whittier AK veterinary community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate may signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the Whittier AK college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Whittier AK programs you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you must make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Whittier AK school is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the Alaska veterinarian colleges you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Whittier AK before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You might find that an online program is the best way to fit your vet training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Whittier AK

Whittier, Alaska

Whittier is a city at the head of the Passage Canal in the U.S. state of Alaska, about 58 miles southeast of Anchorage.[5] The city is within the Valdez–Cordova Census Area. At the 2010 census the population was 220, up from 182 in 2000. The 2016 estimate was 214 people, almost all of whom live in a single building.[6] Whittier is also a port for the Alaska Marine Highway.[7]

The region occupied by Whittier was once part of the portage route of the Chugach people native to Prince William Sound. Later, the passage was used by Russian and American explorers, and by prospecting miners during the gold rush.[5] The nearby Whittier glacier was named for American poet John Greenleaf Whittier in 1915, and the town eventually took the name as well.[8]

During World War II, the United States Army constructed a military facility, complete with port and railroad near Whittier Glacier and named the facility Camp Sullivan. The spur of the Alaska Railroad to Camp Sullivan was completed in 1943 and the port became the entrance for United States soldiers into Alaska.[9]
