Although location and expense are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your evaluations. We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the different responsibilities of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many functions that they can perform within the Shannon AL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the standard vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Shannon AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared with assistants and usually obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complex duties, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Shannon AL area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Shannon ALAn approach that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Shannon AL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for example for commuting and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Alabama as well as across the USA, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to select a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Shannon AL veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or tech school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is often a prerequisite for employment for many Shannon AL vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you select should have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, call some Shannon AL veterinarians that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Shannon AL veterinary community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech college may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate could indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Shannon AL school has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Shannon AL schools you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you must make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Shannon AL school is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the Alabama vet schools you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are offered near Shannon AL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family issues. You may find that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your vet training into your active life.
