Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their residences. After they have found some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are important considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be considered also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate choice. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the varied duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Roodhouse IL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Roodhouse IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more involved functions, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and basically carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Roodhouse IL area research facilities also.

Online Vet Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Roodhouse ILAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Roodhouse IL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for instance for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Illinois and across the United States, you need to ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Roodhouse IL vet technician and assistant colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of Roodhouse IL vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations concerning your specific schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Roodhouse IL veterinarians that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to get practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the schools you are looking at have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Roodhouse IL veterinary community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A low rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Roodhouse IL college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Roodhouse IL colleges you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Roodhouse IL campus is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the Illinois veterinarian schools you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are offered near Roodhouse IL prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies. You may find that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
