After all, you need to locate and enroll in a school that will provide the proper training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach evaluating and contrasting programs so that you can make the right selection? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by searching for schools that are close to their residences. Once they have located some nearby schools, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate decision. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the various roles of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous duties that they can carry out within the Beckley WV veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the conventional veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Beckley WV. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more involved activities, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated duties, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Beckley WV area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Beckley WVAn approach that may make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Beckley WV veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for traveling and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Schools

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in West Virginia and across the Country, you should ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Beckley WV veterinary assistant and tech schools that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that confirms you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for many Beckley WV vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you choose must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the West Virginia school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations involving your specific schools. As a final tip, phone some Beckley WV veterinarians that you might want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Beckley WV vet community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician school can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A lower rate could indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may signify that the Beckley WV school has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Beckley WV schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you have to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Beckley WV college is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the West Virginia veterinary schools you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Beckley WV prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Beckley WV

Beckley, West Virginia

Beckley is a city in and the county seat of Raleigh County, West Virginia, United States. It was founded on April 4, 1838.[6] Beckley was named in honor of John James Beckley, who was the first Clerk of the House of Representatives and the first Librarian of Congress. It was founded by his son Alfred Beckley (US Army general and Confederate militia commander, born in Washington, D.C.). The current mayor is Rob Rappold [7]

Although founded in 1838, Beckley existed only on paper at that time, "Alfred Beckley said he "was frequently jeered and laughed at for his Paper Town..."[8] Early in its history, the town was known as Beckley, Raleigh Court House, and, occasionally, Beckleyville. The town was originally located in Fayette County, Virginia. In 1850 the act of the Virginia legislature creating Raleigh County named Beckley the county seat. The city is sometimes called the "Smokeless Coal Capital", "The City of Champions" and the "Gateway To Southern West Virginia."[citation needed] Beckley had the first "community antenna" television system in the United States, a forerunner of cable television.[citation needed]

During the presidential primaries of 1960, the vehicles of rivals John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey stopped at the same streetcorner in Beckley. Recognizing each other, the two men got out and chatted briefly.[9]
