But just how do you approach reviewing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the correct choice? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their residences. After they have identified some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are important considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate selection. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different duties of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Job of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are a number of functions that they can perform within the Ellenton FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the standard veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Ellenton FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared to assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more complex functions, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Ellenton FL area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Ellenton FLAn approach that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Ellenton FL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for traveling and study materials, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Training Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Florida and across the Country, you should ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Ellenton FL vet assistant and tech schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a precondition for employment for many Ellenton FL vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Ellenton FL veterinarians that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help build connections in the local Ellenton FL veterinary community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant program may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate may mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Ellenton FL school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Ellenton FL programs you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you need to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Ellenton FL college is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online might be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the Florida veterinary programs you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are available near Ellenton FL before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your active life.
