We have furnished several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of jobs that they can carry out within the Boynton Beach FL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Boynton Beach FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more involved undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared to assistants and normally earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Boynton Beach FL area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Courses

attending vet tech school online in Boynton Beach FLAn option that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Boynton Beach FL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Colleges

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Florida and across the USA, you must ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Boynton Beach FL veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or tech college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of Boynton Beach FL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Boynton Beach FL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the programs you are looking at have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Boynton Beach FL veterinary community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A lower rate might mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might mean that the Boynton Beach FL program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Boynton Beach FL colleges you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you must make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Boynton Beach FL campus is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the Florida vet colleges you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Boynton Beach FL prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family issues. You may find that an online college is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your busy life.

In 1894, two years before Henry Morrison Flagler built his railroad, a former American Civil War major named Nathan Boynton first set eyes on the area that now bears his name. Boynton hailed from Port Huron, Michigan. He was so impressed by the natural beauty of the year-round sunshine and pristine beaches, he built the famous Boynton Hotel, where he also spent winters with his family. The first settlers, whom Boynton had brought along from Michigan, soon realized that many fruits and vegetables thrived in the fertile climate. Pineapples, tomatoes, mangoes, and citrus fruit were packed in crates and shipped by the ton on the newly built Florida East Coast Railroad to satisfy the appetites of hungry Americans across the country. Major Boynton died on May 27, 1911 in Port Huron, but the hotel lasted until 1925.

Boynton Beach was founded on September 26, 1898 when Byrd Spilman Dewey and her husband Fred S. Dewey filed the original plat in the Dade County courthouse for the Town of Boynton.[7] The town was incorporated in 1920 as the Town of Boynton. The name "Boynton Beach" was first used by a community that broke off from the Town of Boynton in 1931. In 1939, that community changed its name to "Ocean Ridge" while The Town of Boynton took the name "Boynton Beach" in 1941.[8]
