After all, you need to locate and enroll in a college that will furnish the proper training so that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach assessing and comparing schools so that you can make the correct selection? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their residences. Once they have located some local schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different roles of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many jobs that they can carry out within the Altamonte Springs FL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Altamonte Springs FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training in contrast to assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and essentially perform the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Altamonte Springs FL area research facilities also.

Online Veterinarian Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Altamonte Springs FLAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Altamonte Springs FL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for example for traveling and study materials, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Schools

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Florida and across the United States, you should ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other important qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to select a program that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Altamonte Springs FL veterinary assistant and technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that ensures you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for many Altamonte Springs FL vet practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Altamonte Springs FL vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Altamonte Springs FL vet community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A low rate might signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might indicate that the Altamonte Springs FL college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Altamonte Springs FL colleges you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Altamonte Springs FL campus is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Florida veterinarian schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Altamonte Springs FL before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online school is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your busy life.
