After all, you have to search for and enroll in a college that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach assessing and comparing colleges so that you can make the ideal selection? Many future students begin their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their homes. When they have located some nearby colleges, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final selection. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different responsibilities of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main determiner will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Wiggins CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Wiggins CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved activities, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared with assistants and typically earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more involved functions, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Wiggins CO area research facilities also.

Vet Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Wiggins COAn approach that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are provided via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Wiggins CO veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for example for travel and study supplies, can be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Training Programs

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Colorado as well as across the USA, you must ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other essential qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to enroll in a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Wiggins CO veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the vet assistant or technician college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding review process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is often a precondition for employment for many Wiggins CO veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final tip, call some Wiggins CO vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to get practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help build associations in the local Wiggins CO vet community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician program may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate could indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Wiggins CO program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Wiggins CO programs you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet tech classes from home or work, you must make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Wiggins CO school is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you find out if the Colorado veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Wiggins CO prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your vet education into your hectic life.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Vet Tech?

When preparing to interview for a veterinary job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you may be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers often ask veterinary applicants is "What made you choose veterinary care as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not only the personal reasons you may have for being a vet assistant, but also what characteristics and skills you possess that make you good at what you do.
