After all, you need to search for and enroll in a college that will deliver the necessary training so that you can be successful as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle reviewing and comparing schools so that you can make the proper choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their residences. When they have found some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are important factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs need to be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final selection. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the different responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of jobs that they can perform within the Burlington CO veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Burlington CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complex duties, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Burlington CO area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Burlington COAn approach that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Burlington CO veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for instance for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Colorado as well as across the USA, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other important qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to choose a school that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Burlington CO veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or tech school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a prerequisite for employment for many Burlington CO vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Burlington CO veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the schools you are looking at have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local Burlington CO vet community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate might signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Burlington CO program has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Burlington CO programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you need to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Burlington CO campus is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the Colorado veterinarian schools you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Burlington CO prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your active life.
