But just how do you approach assessing and comparing schools so that you can make the proper choice? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their homes. Although cost and location are important factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be looked into also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final decision. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different roles of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Role of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Kelseyville CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Kelseyville CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared with assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complex functions, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Kelseyville CA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Courses

attending vet tech school online in Kelseyville CAAn option that may make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered over the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Kelseyville CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for traveling and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California as well as across the Country, you must ask some qualifying questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Kelseyville CA veterinary technician and assistant programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Kelseyville CA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final tip, phone some Kelseyville CA vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest one or more colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to get clinical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Kelseyville CA veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech school may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate might suggest that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Kelseyville CA school has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Kelseyville CA colleges you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Kelseyville CA school is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the California veterinary programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Kelseyville CA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to sickness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
