We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.
The Job of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant
One of the first decisions that you will need to make is if you want to train as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. Part of your decision may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many jobs that they can carry out within the Hercules CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialization.
- Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Hercules CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
- Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
- Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Hercules CA area research facilities as well.
Veterinarian Online Courses
An alternative that might be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Hercules CA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, for example for commuting and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right option for you.
Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Colleges
At this point you probably have decided on which veterinary credential that you wish to earn, and if you intend to study online or attend a program on campus. Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California and across the United States, you need to ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other essential qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Hercules CA veterinary technician and assistant programs that you are considering.
Is the Vet Program Accredited? It’s important that you confirm that the vet technician or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a requirement for employment for a number of Hercules CA vet clinics and hospitals.
What is the School’s Reputation? The vet college or vocational school and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your specific schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Hercules CA veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some schools not on your list.
Are Internships Offered? The best means to get clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Hercules CA veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.
Is there a Job Placement Program? Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate could mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Hercules CA college has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.
How Big are the Classes? If the classes are larger, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Hercules CA colleges you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.
Where is the College Located? Okay, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you must make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Hercules CA college is located near or in a large city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.
Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule? And finally, it’s essential that you find out if the California vet programs you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near Hercules CA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family responsibilities. You may find that an online program is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Hercules CA
Hercules is a city in western Contra Costa County, California. Situated along the coast of San Pablo Bay, it is located in the eastern region of the San Francisco Bay Area, about 10 miles (16 km) north of Berkeley, California. As of 2010, its population was 24,060, according to the United States Census Bureau. Hercules was founded in 1881 as a company town for the Hercules Powder Company, one of several explosive manufacturers that were active along the Pinole shoreline in the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Starting in the 1970s, Hercules was heavily redeveloped as suburban bedroom community that lies along the I-80 corridor in Eastern Contra Costa County. It has a very ethnically diverse population.
Contra Costa County’s first inhabitants arrived in the area six to ten thousand years ago, including the Bay Miwok people and the Huichin Ohlone People; however there were no known significant settlements in the Hercules area.
The land that would become Hercules was part of a tract of land known as “Pinole y Canada del Hambre” which was granted in 1823 to Ygnacio Martinez (for whom the city of Martinez, California was named) for his service as the commandant of the Presidio of San Francisco. This grant was reconfirmed in 1842 as Rancho El Pinole. In 1848, this area became part of the United States with rest of California. Contra Costa County was created in 1850 as one of California’s original 27 counties. The Central Pacific Railroad (later part of Southern Pacific) ran the first rail lines across Hercules’ waterfront in late 1878, as the main route for the Transcontinental Railroad was realigned via train ferry through the purpose-built town of Port Costa then to Richmond and Berkeley to connect at the Oakland Pier. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad came through the area around 1899.
