After all, you need to locate and enroll in a program that will provide the necessary training so that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle evaluating and comparing programs so that you can make the ideal choice? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their homes. After they have located some nearby schools, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final decision. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the various duties of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are many functions that they can carry out within the Desert Hot Springs CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Desert Hot Springs CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared to assistants and normally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved duties, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Desert Hot Springs CA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Desert Hot Springs CAAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Desert Hot Springs CA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, such as for travel and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Training Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California as well as across the USA, you should ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other significant qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Desert Hot Springs CA vet assistant and technician schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet assistant or technician college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is frequently a requirement for employment for many Desert Hot Springs CA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Desert Hot Springs CA veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help build connections in the local Desert Hot Springs CA veterinarian community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate could indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Desert Hot Springs CA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Desert Hot Springs CA programs you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you need to make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Desert Hot Springs CA school is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the California vet schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near Desert Hot Springs CA prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies. You may discover that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your vet education into your hectic life.
