After all, you have to search for and enroll in a school that will provide the appropriate training to ensure that you can be successful as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle evaluating and comparing programs so that you can make the correct choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their residences. Once they have identified some area schools, they determine which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are important concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be looked into also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final decision. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the different responsibilities of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many duties that they can carry out within the Texarkana AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the standard veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Texarkana AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more involved activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training in contrast to assistants and generally acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated functions, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Texarkana AR area research facilities also.

Online Vet Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Texarkana ARAn option that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using various venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Texarkana AR veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, such as for commuting and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Training Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Arkansas as well as across the USA, you need to ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other significant qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Texarkana AR vet assistant and technician colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Texarkana AR veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, phone some Texarkana AR veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to get clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Texarkana AR veterinary community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant college may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate may indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Texarkana AR program has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Texarkana AR schools you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from work or home, you must make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Texarkana AR campus is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Arkansas veterinarian colleges you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Texarkana AR before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your vet training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Texarkana AR

Texarkana metropolitan area

The Texarkana, AR–Texarkana, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), as defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget, is a two-county region anchored by the twin cities of Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas, and encompassing the surrounding communities in Bowie County, Texas and Miller County, Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 143,486.[5] Texarkana is a subset of the broader Ark-La-Tex region.

Texarkana was founded in 1873 on the junction of two railroads. The name is a portmanteau of TEXas, ARKansas, and nearby LouisiANA. One tradition tells of a Red River steamboat named The Texarkana, c. 1860. Another story mentions a storekeeper named Swindle in Red Land, Louisiana who concocted a drink called "Texarkana Bitters". A third account states that Col. Gus Knobel, a railroad surveyor, coined the name.[7] Local lore suggests that, before Texas's annexation by the US, lawlessness ruled in the area that at times was claimed by various nations.

In 1876, Texarkana, Texas, was granted a charter under an act of the Texas legislature, and a Texarkana, Texas, post office operated from 1886 to 1892. Later, Congressman Morris Sheppard (D-TX) secured a postal order officially changing the name to "Texarkana, Arkansas-Texas".[7]
