The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are numerous duties that they can carry out within the San Carlos AZ veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near San Carlos AZ. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared with assistants and typically earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or San Carlos AZ area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Training Classes

Since the classes are offered via the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area San Carlos AZ veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for instance for traveling and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Arizona and across the Country, you need to ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other essential qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to choose a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the San Carlos AZ vet assistant and technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of San Carlos AZ veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arizona school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, call some San Carlos AZ veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local San Carlos AZ veterinary community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech program may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate may indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the San Carlos AZ school has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the San Carlos AZ schools you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already covered location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet technician classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the San Carlos AZ campus is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Arizona veterinary schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near San Carlos AZ before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online college is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

The Hotel San Carlos branch in Phoenix, Arizona, also known as San Carlos Hotel, is both an operating hotel and tourist site. It has been associated with ghost sightings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1983 as San Carlos Hotel.[1] Hotel San Carlos is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation[2]

Many employees have said that they have seen ghosts at the hotel, the most commonly mentioned being that of Leone Jensen. Whether the ghost sighting theory is a promotional stunt or not is debatable.

The site where the hotel sits was the location of the first school in Phoenix. The four room adobe school was inaugurated in 1874. It was replaced with a larger structure in 1879. The school was enlarged several times but was condemned in 1916, with construction of a luxury hotel in mind. In addition, many area children died during the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic that attacked the United States.
