We have furnished several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied duties of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main determiner will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many functions that they can perform within the Kykotsmovi Village AZ veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Kykotsmovi Village AZ. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Kykotsmovi Village AZ area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Kykotsmovi Village AZAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Kykotsmovi Village AZ veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for traveling and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Colleges

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Arizona and across the United States, you must ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to select a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Kykotsmovi Village AZ vet assistant and technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that verifies you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is frequently a prerequisite for employment for a number of Kykotsmovi Village AZ veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arizona school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final pointer, get in touch with some Kykotsmovi Village AZ veterinarians that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local Kykotsmovi Village AZ vet community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech college can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate may indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the Kykotsmovi Village AZ college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Kykotsmovi Village AZ colleges you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet technician classes from work or home, you have to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Kykotsmovi Village AZ campus is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes could be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you ascertain if the Arizona veterinarian colleges you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are available near Kykotsmovi Village AZ prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
