Part of your decision may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the principal factor will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are many functions that they can carry out within the Vernon AL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Vernon AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and usually obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more involved functions, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Vernon AL area research facilities as well.

Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for travel and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. As we discussed in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Vernon AL veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet assistant or technician program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Vernon AL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Vernon AL veterinarians that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Vernon AL veterinarian community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician college can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate could mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might indicate that the Vernon AL school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Vernon AL colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you must make sure that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Vernon AL school is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the Alabama veterinary colleges you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are available near Vernon AL before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online school is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.
