After all, you need to search for and enroll in a college that will provide the appropriate training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle reviewing and comparing schools so that you can make the proper selection? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their homes. After they have identified some area colleges, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are important concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final decision. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the various responsibilities of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Rainsville AL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Rainsville AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared to assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved functions, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Rainsville AL area research facilities also.

Vet Online Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Rainsville ALAn option that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available via the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Rainsville AL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, such as for traveling and study materials, can be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Schools

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Alabama and across the USA, you must ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to select a school that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Rainsville AL vet technician and assistant schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that confirms you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a prerequisite for employment for a number of Rainsville AL veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you select should have an outstanding reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Rainsville AL veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to get practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help establish connections in the local Rainsville AL veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech program may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate may suggest that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the Rainsville AL college has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Rainsville AL colleges you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you must confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Rainsville AL campus is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Alabama veterinary programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are available near Rainsville AL prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family issues. You may find that an online school is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
