Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are numerous functions that they can perform within the New Market AL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the standard veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near New Market AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or New Market AL area research facilities also.

And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area New Market AL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for instance for commuting and study supplies, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Alabama as well as across the Country, you should ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to select a school that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the New Market AL vet technician and assistant schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough review process that verifies you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for many New Market AL veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some New Market AL veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They might even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the schools you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help build relationships in the local New Market AL veterinary community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate could suggest that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the New Market AL college has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the New Market AL schools you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you have to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the New Market AL campus is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Alabama veterinary schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near New Market AL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, sickness or family issues. You might find that an online college is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
