The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate selection. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various roles of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many tasks that they can perform within the Eufaula AL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Eufaula AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared with assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and basically perform the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Eufaula AL area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Eufaula ALAn alternative that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided via the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Eufaula AL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for example for traveling and study materials, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Alabama as well as across the USA, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our opening, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Eufaula AL veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a precondition for employment for a number of Eufaula AL vet practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Eufaula AL veterinarians that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to get clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Find out if the programs you are considering have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local Eufaula AL veterinary community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate may signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might indicate that the Eufaula AL school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Eufaula AL programs you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Eufaula AL college is located in or near a large city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you find out if the Alabama veterinarian schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Eufaula AL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss due to work, sickness or family issues. You might discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your active life.

A Little Bit About Eufaula AL

Eufaula, Alabama

The site along the Chattahoochee River that is now modern-day Eufaula was occupied by three Creek tribes, including the Eufaulas.[4]:3 By the 1820s the land was part of the Creek Indian Territory and supposedly off-limits to white settlement.[4]:4 By 1827 enough illegal white settlement had occurred that the Creeks appealed to the federal government for protection of their property rights. In July of that year, federal troops were sent to the Eufaula area to remove the settlers by force of arms, a conflict known as the "Intruders War".[4]:4

The Creeks signed the Treaty of Washington in 1826, ceding most of their land in Georgia and eastern Alabama to the United States,[5] but it was not fully effective in practice until the late 1820s. The 1832 Treaty of Cusseta, by which the Creeks ceded all land east of the Mississippi River to the United States, allowed white settlers to legally buy land from the Creek. However, the treaty's terms did not require any natives to relocate.[6] By 1835 the land on which the town was built had been mostly purchased by white settlers, and had a store, owned in part by William Irwin, after whom the new settlement was named "Irwinton".[4]:5

By the mid 1830s downtown Irwinton was platted out and development was well underway.[4]:9–16 Much of its historic character has been preserved and is now known as the Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District. In 1842[4]:18 or 1843[7]:18 Irwinton was renamed "Eufaula", possibly[7]:18 to end postal confusion ensuing from its proximity to Irwinton, Georgia.[4]:18 The town was officially incorporated under that name in 1857.[8]:10
