But just how do you approach analyzing and contrasting programs so that you can make the ideal selection? Many future students launch their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their residences. After they have located some area colleges, they ascertain which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs need to be looked into also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied duties of vet assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Lincoln CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Lincoln CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Lincoln CA area research facilities also.

Vet Online Courses

attending vet tech school online in Lincoln CAAn option that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using various venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Lincoln CA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for instance for commuting and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California as well as across the USA, you must ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to choose a school that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Lincoln CA veterinary assistant and technician programs that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet assistant or tech school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that ensures you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a precondition for employment for many Lincoln CA veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Lincoln CA veterinarians that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the programs you are considering have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help build relationships in the local Lincoln CA vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant college may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate could suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might mean that the Lincoln CA program has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Lincoln CA colleges you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Lincoln CA college is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the California veterinarian schools you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Lincoln CA prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Lincoln CA

Lincoln, California

Lincoln is a city in Placer County, California, United States, part of the Sacramento metropolitan area. Located in an area of rapid suburban development, it grew 282.1 percent between 2000 and 2010, making it the fastest growing city over 10,000 people in the U.S.[9] Its 2015 population was estimated to be 45,837.[7]

Lincoln is part of the Sacramento-Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The original townsite was surveyed and laid out in 1859 by Theodore Judah along the proposed line of the California Central Railroad. The name "Lincoln" was conferred in honor of Charles Lincoln Wilson, one of the organizers and directors of the California Central Railroad. The CCRR was planned as a rail link between the cities of Marysville and Sacramento via a connection to the Sacramento Valley Railroad in Folsom. Grading from Folsom to Marysville commenced in 1858 and was completed to Marysville by 1860. Track laying began that same year and the rails reached the site of Lincoln in early 1861. At this point, due to a lack of funds, further construction on the California Central was temporarily halted and Lincoln experienced a small-scale boom as the northern terminus of this new road. Within a few years, however, more investors were found and the line was extended to Wheatland, in Yuba County, bringing an end to this early stage of Lincoln's development.
