Many potential students start their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their residences. Once they have found some local schools, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make a final decision. We have provided several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of functions that they can perform within the Jay FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Jay FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared with assistants and usually acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Jay FL area research facilities also.

Vet Online Courses

attending vet tech school online in Jay FLAn option that may make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Jay FL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for travel and study supplies, can be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Florida as well as across the United States, you need to ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other important qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to choose a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Jay FL vet assistant and technician schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Jay FL veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations concerning your specific schools. As a final pointer, contact some Jay FL veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to get clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help develop relationships in the local Jay FL veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate may indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might mean that the Jay FL college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Jay FL schools you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet tech classes from home or work, you must confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Jay FL school is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking classes online may be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the Florida vet schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Jay FL before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of work, sickness or family issues. You may find that an online program is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.
