After all, you must find and enroll in a college that will provide the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you go about assessing and comparing colleges so that you can make the proper selection? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by searching for schools that are close to their homes. When they have identified some local colleges, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are important concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be considered as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate selection. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the different roles of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are numerous duties that they can perform within the Camp Pendleton CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Camp Pendleton CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Camp Pendleton CA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Schools

attending vet tech school online in Camp Pendleton CAAn option that may make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available over the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Camp Pendleton CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for commuting and study supplies, may be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make certain that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California as well as across the United States, you should ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Camp Pendleton CA veterinary assistant and tech schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the vet technician or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that ensures you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Camp Pendleton CA veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your specific schools. As a final recommendation, get in touch with some Camp Pendleton CA veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local Camp Pendleton CA vet community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate might mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might indicate that the Camp Pendleton CA program has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Camp Pendleton CA schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Camp Pendleton CA college is located in or near a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the California vet schools you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Camp Pendleton CA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to sickness, work or family issues. You might find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Camp Pendleton CA

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps. It is located on the Southern California coast, in San Diego County, and bordered by Oceanside to the south, Cleveland National Forest, Orange and Riverside counties to the north, and Fallbrook to the east.

The base was established in 1942 to train U.S. Marines for service in World War II. By October 1944, Camp Pendleton was declared a "permanent installation" and by 1946, it became the home of the 1st Marine Division. It was named after Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton (1860–1942), who had long advocated setting up a training base for the Marine Corps on the west coast. Today it is the home to myriad Operating Force units including the I Marine Expeditionary Force and various training commands.

In 1769, a Spanish expedition led by Captain Gaspar de Portolá explored northward from Loreto, Baja California Sur, seeking to reach Monterey Bay, something never before done overland by Europeans. On July 20 of that year, the expedition arrived in the area now known as Camp Pendleton, and as it was the holy day of St. Margaret, they christened the land in the name of Santa Margarita. The expedition went on to establish military outposts and Franciscan missions at San Diego and Monterey.
