Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal factor will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many jobs that they can carry out within the New Cuyama CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the standard vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near New Cuyama CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared to assistants and typically acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or New Cuyama CA area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Courses

attending vet tech school online in New Cuyama CAAn approach that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available over the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at a local New Cuyama CA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for example for commuting and study supplies, can be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in California and across the United States, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other important qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the New Cuyama CA vet assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet assistant or technician program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a precondition for employment for a number of New Cuyama CA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final pointer, contact some New Cuyama CA veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local New Cuyama CA veterinarian community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A low rate may mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may signify that the New Cuyama CA school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the New Cuyama CA colleges you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the New Cuyama CA school is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the California vet colleges you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near New Cuyama CA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of work, sickness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About New Cuyama CA

New Cuyama, California

New Cuyama is a census-designated place in the Cuyama Valley, in Santa Barbara County, California, in the United States. It was named after the Chumash Indian word for "clams", most likely due to the millions of petrified prehistoric clamshell fossils that are found in the surrounding areas. The town is home to the majority of the utility infrastructure for its residents, including nearby neighbor Cuyama, California. New Cuyama is located very close to the intersection points for Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura and Kern counties. The town is served by Highway 166 (connecting U.S. Route 101 and Interstate 5) and the public-use New Cuyama Airport. The population was 517 at the 2010 census.

The area was considered territory of the Yokuts people, but Chumash Indians from the Pacific Coast are also known to have frequented the area. The imprint of an old Indian trail can still be seen leading over the hills of present-day Ventura County to the headwaters of Piru Creek. The name "Cuyama" comes from an Indian village named for the Chumash word kuyam, meaning "clam" or "freshwater mollusk".[2]

The area's recorded history dates to 1822 when Mexico won independence from Spain and took over the Spanish colony of Alta California. Two Mexican land grants, the Rancho Cuyama (Lataillade) and Rancho Cuyama (Rojo), were granted in the 1840s by Governors Manuel Micheltorena and Pío Pico in the lower Cuyama Valley along the Cuyama River, where current New Cuyama is, privatizing ownership of the land.
