But just how do you tackle evaluating and contrasting programs so that you can make the ideal choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their homes. Although expense and location are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final decision. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different roles of vet techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of functions that they can perform within the Greenbrier AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Greenbrier AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated functions, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Greenbrier AR area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Greenbrier ARAn approach that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Greenbrier AR veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for travel and study supplies, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Arkansas and across the Country, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to select a school that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Greenbrier AR veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet assistant or tech program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that verifies you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a precondition for employment for many Greenbrier AR veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final pointer, contact some Greenbrier AR vet clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Greenbrier AR veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A low rate could suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might indicate that the Greenbrier AR program has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Greenbrier AR schools you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you have to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Greenbrier AR school is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you ascertain if the Arkansas veterinarian colleges you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near Greenbrier AR prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, sickness or family emergencies. You may find that an online school is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
