After all, you need to find and enroll in a program that will furnish the necessary training so that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach reviewing and contrasting programs so that you can make the best choice? Many future students launch their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their residences. When they have found some nearby schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are important considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be evaluated as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate choice. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the varied responsibilities of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many functions that they can perform within the West Granby CT veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near West Granby CT. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared with assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and basically carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or West Granby CT area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in West Granby CTAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local West Granby CT veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, such as for commuting and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Connecticut as well as across the USA, you should ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the West Granby CT vet assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet technician or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is frequently a requirement for employment for many West Granby CT vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Connecticut school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, contact some West Granby CT vet clinics that you might want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the schools you are looking at have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help build associations in the local West Granby CT veterinarian community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate might mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the West Granby CT program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the West Granby CT colleges you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we previously covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the West Granby CT school is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the Connecticut vet colleges you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are offered near West Granby CT before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You might find that an online program is the best solution to fit your vet training into your hectic life.
