But just how do you tackle assessing and contrasting schools so that you can make the ideal choice? Many aspiring students begin their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their residences. After they have found some area schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are significant concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your evaluations. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate selection. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many functions that they can carry out within the Taft CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the standard veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Taft CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved undertakings, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more involved tasks, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Taft CA area research facilities also.

Online Veterinarian Schools

attending vet tech school online in Taft CAAn alternative that might make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Taft CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, such as for travel and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Taft CA vet assistant and technician colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that verifies you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a prerequisite for employment for many Taft CA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, call some Taft CA veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are looking at have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local Taft CA vet community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate could indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the Taft CA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Taft CA schools you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet technician classes from work or home, you need to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Taft CA campus is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do decide to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the California veterinary colleges you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near Taft CA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies. You may discover that an online program is the best solution to fit your vet education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Taft CA

Taft, California

Taft (formerly Moron, Moro, and Siding Number Two)[9] is a city in the foothills at the extreme southwestern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California. Taft is located 32 miles (51 km) west-southwest of Bakersfield,[9] at an elevation of 955 feet (291 m).[7] The population was 9,327 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.1 square miles (39.1 km2).

It was named for President William H. Taft in 1909.[10]

The town began as Siding Number Two on the Sunset Railroad.[9] According to a display at the West Kern Oil Museum, local residents asked the Southern Pacific Railroad if the station could be named Moro when the rails arrived in about 1900, but a railroad official declined because the name would be too easily confused with the coastal town of Morro Bay. Instead, the railroad directed the station be called Moron, a word which as yet had no association with stupidity. Pictures of local businesses, including the Moron Pharmacy, hang in the museum.
