After all, you have to locate and enroll in a program that will provide the necessary training so that you can be successful as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach analyzing and comparing colleges so that you can make the proper selection? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by looking for schools that are close to their homes. When they have identified some area schools, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are important considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs should be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the varied roles of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Maitland FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Maitland FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Maitland FL area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Schools

attending vet tech school online in Maitland FLAn option that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Maitland FL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, such as for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Florida as well as across the United States, you should ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Maitland FL vet assistant and technician programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Maitland FL veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Maitland FL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the schools you are looking at have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Maitland FL veterinary community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician college may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate could mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Maitland FL program has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Maitland FL schools you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you must make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Maitland FL campus is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Florida veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Maitland FL before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your vet education into your hectic life.
