The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are many functions that they can carry out within the Hurlburt Field FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Hurlburt Field FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more involved undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared with assistants and typically obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved functions, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years to complete. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Hurlburt Field FL area research facilities as well.

Since the classes are made available via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Hurlburt Field FL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, such as for traveling and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Florida as well as across the Country, you need to ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously mentioned other important qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Hurlburt Field FL vet technician and assistant programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary tech or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a precondition for employment for many Hurlburt Field FL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final tip, contact some Hurlburt Field FL veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help build connections in the local Hurlburt Field FL vet community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate might suggest that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Hurlburt Field FL program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Hurlburt Field FL programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Hurlburt Field FL campus is located in or near a larger city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the Florida veterinary programs you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are available near Hurlburt Field FL before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family issues. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Hurlburt Field FL

Hurlburt Field

Hurlburt Field (ICAO: KHRT, FAA LID: HRT) is a United States Air Force installation located in Okaloosa County, Florida, immediately west of the Town of Mary Esther. It is part of the greater Eglin Air Force Base reservation, and is home to Headquarters Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), the 1st Special Operations Wing (1 SOW), the USAF Special Operations School (USAFSOS) and the Air Combat Command's (ACC) 505th Command and Control Wing. It was named for First Lieutenant Donald Wilson Hurlburt, who died in a crash at Eglin. The installation is nearly 6,700 acres (27 km2), and employs nearly 8,000 military personnel.

This facility is assigned a three-letter location identifier of HRT by the Federal Aviation Administration, but it does not have an International Air Transport Association (IATA) airport code (the IATA assigned HRT to RAF Linton-on-Ouse in England).[1][2][3][4]

Hurlburt began as a small training field for the much larger Eglin Field. It was initially designated Eglin Auxiliary Field No. 9, and later as Eglin AFB Auxiliary Field 9/Hurlburt Field when the U.S. Air Force became an independent service, before being administratively separated from the rest of the Eglin AFB complex in the 1950s. However, once separated, the facility retained its history and kept all building numbers the same; i.e., all start with a "9". The installation was named by then-Eglin Field base commander Brigadier General Grandison Gardner for First Lieutenant Donald Wilson Hurlburt (1919–1943), who was killed in an aircraft crash at the main base, then known as Eglin Field, in 1943.
