The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are a number of jobs that they can carry out within the Fairburn GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Fairburn GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved undertakings, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and normally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Fairburn GA area research facilities as well.

And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Fairburn GA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for travel and study materials, can be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Georgia and across the Country, you should ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Fairburn GA vet assistant and tech schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the vet technician or assistant college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous review process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Fairburn GA veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final tip, contact some Fairburn GA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the colleges you are considering have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help build associations in the local Fairburn GA vet community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate may indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Fairburn GA college has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Fairburn GA colleges you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you have to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Fairburn GA college is located in or near a large city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the Georgia vet colleges you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Fairburn GA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
