After all, you have to find and enroll in a college that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach assessing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the proper choice? Many aspiring students begin their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their residences. After they have located some area colleges, they ascertain which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate selection. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the different roles of vet assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the principal factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Canon City CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Canon City CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared with assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more involved duties, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Canon City CO area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Schools

attending vet tech school online in Canon City COAn approach that may make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Canon City CO veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, for example for travel and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Training Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Colorado and across the USA, you need to ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other important qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Canon City CO veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is frequently a requirement for employment for many Canon City CO veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final tip, call some Canon City CO vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to get clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical setting. Find out if the schools you are looking at have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local Canon City CO vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate could mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Canon City CO college has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Canon City CO programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you must make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Canon City CO campus is located in or close by a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the Colorado vet colleges you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Canon City CO prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, sickness or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online school is the best solution to fit your vet education into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Canon City CO

Cañon City, Colorado

Cañon City /ˈkænjən ˈsɪti/ is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Fremont County, Colorado, United States.[7] The city population was 16,400 at the 2010 United States Census.[8] Cañon City straddles the easterly flowing Arkansas River and is a popular tourist destination for sightseeing, whitewater rafting, and rock climbing. The city is known for its many public parks, fossil discoveries, Skyline Drive, extensive natural hiking paths, and the tropical-like weather year-round."[9]

In 1994, the United States Board on Geographic Names approved adding the tilde to the official name of Cañon City, a change from Canon City as the official name in its decisions of 1906 and 1975.[10] It is one of the few U.S. cities to have an Ñ in its name, others being La Cañada Flintridge, California; Española, New Mexico; Peñasco, New Mexico; and Cañones, New Mexico.

Cañon City was laid out on January 17, 1858, during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, but then the land was left idle. A new company "jumped the claim" to the town's site in late 1859, and it put up the first building in February 1860. This town was originally intended as a commercial center for mining in South Park and the upper Arkansas River.[11]
