The Function of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Beacon Falls CT veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Beacon Falls CT. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared with assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Beacon Falls CT area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Courses

attending vet tech school online in Beacon Falls CTAn option that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Beacon Falls CT veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, such as for commuting and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Colleges

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Connecticut as well as across the United States, you should ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Beacon Falls CT veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary technician or assistant program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that confirms you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for many Beacon Falls CT veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Connecticut school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations involving your specific schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Beacon Falls CT vet clinics that you might want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help build associations in the local Beacon Falls CT veterinary community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate may signify that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Beacon Falls CT school has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Beacon Falls CT schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you must make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Beacon Falls CT campus is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you find out if the Connecticut vet colleges you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Beacon Falls CT prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You may find that an online school is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Beacon Falls CT

Beacon Falls, Connecticut

Beacon Falls is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut. It lies in the southwestern part of the state, and is bisected by the Naugatuck River. The population was 5,246 at the 2000 census. The population increased to 6,049 at the 2010 census.

Settlers from Derby, Connecticut moved to the Beacon Falls area in 1678. The town was incorporated in 1871 on lands carved from the neighboring towns of Bethany, Seymour, Naugatuck and Oxford.

The history of Beacon Falls is tied to the series of manufacturing concerns that operated in the town's impressive brick factory buildings on North Main Street, adjacent to the Naugatuck River. The last and most successful of those concerns was the Beacon Falls Rubber Shoe Company. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries rubber manufacturing thrived in the Lower Naugatuck Valley. This followed the invention and 1844 patent, by Connecticut native Charles Goodyear, of a chemical process called Vulcanization to convert natural rubber into a durable, flexible, waterproof material. In the 1850s the American Hard Rubber Company built a brick factory in Beacon Falls, utilizing water power from the Naugatuck River. The company made buttons, whip sockets, and powder flasks. After that company was acquired and moved to Long Island, the empty brick building was bought by the Home Woolen Company, which in the 1860s expanded and manufactured woolen shawls, popular at the time with men, women and Civil War soldiers. The Home Woolen Company thrived for 20-plus years until it became insolvent in 1887.
