After all, you have to search for and enroll in a program that will provide the proper training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you go about assessing and comparing programs so that you can make the ideal selection? Many future students begin their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their residences. Once they have located some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be looked into also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate choice. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the different duties of vet assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Role of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of duties that they can perform within the South Bay FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near South Bay FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and essentially perform the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or South Bay FL area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in South Bay FLAn approach that might make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area South Bay FL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, such as for traveling and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Schools

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Florida and across the Country, you must ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the South Bay FL vet technician and assistant programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is often a prerequisite for employment for many South Bay FL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final tip, call some South Bay FL vet clinics that you may want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are looking at have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local South Bay FL veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A lower rate could indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the South Bay FL college has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the South Bay FL colleges you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary technician classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the South Bay FL campus is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online could be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Florida veterinarian schools you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near South Bay FL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss as a result of sickness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online college is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your hectic life.
