Many future students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their homes. Although location and expense are important concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your comparisons. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the different responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Job of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the primary determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many jobs that they can perform within the San Anselmo CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near San Anselmo CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and basically perform the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or San Anselmo CA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Colleges

attending vet tech school online in San Anselmo CAAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area San Anselmo CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, such as for traveling and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Schools

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in California as well as across the Country, you must ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to choose a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the San Anselmo CA veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for many San Anselmo CA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some San Anselmo CA vet clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help build associations in the local San Anselmo CA veterinary community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant college can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A lower rate may mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the San Anselmo CA program has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the San Anselmo CA schools you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you must make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the San Anselmo CA campus is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you ascertain if the California veterinarian programs you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near San Anselmo CA before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family responsibilities. You may find that an online college is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About San Anselmo CA

San Anselmo, California

San Anselmo is an incorporated town in Marin County, California, United States. San Anselmo is located 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of San Rafael,[8] at an elevation of 46 feet (14 m).[6] It is located about 20 miles (32 km) north of San Francisco. Neighboring towns include San Rafael to the east, Fairfax to the west, and Ross to the south. Mount Tamalpais dominates the view to the south. The population was 12,336 at the 2010 census.

The land in and around San Anselmo was mostly pastoral until 1874, when the North Pacific Coast Railroad (NPC) added to its line a spur track from San Anselmo to San Rafael. In 1875, the railroad completed a line from Sausalito to Tomales and north to Cazadero via San Anselmo. For a few years, the town was referred to on railroad maps as "Junction", but in 1883 the name San Anselmo came back into use. The San Anselmo post office opened in 1892.[8] Two postal substations were operated: Lansdale, from 1924 to 1962, and Yolanda, from 1924 to 1954.[8]

From 1902 until the early 1940s, San Anselmo was part of Marin's Northwestern Pacific (in 1907, investors formed the NWP) Electric Train system.[9][10][11] The Miracle Mile's and Center Boulevard's current "raised roadbed" were the railroad's right of way. Becoming unprofitable as a result of competition from the automobile and the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge, the railway was officially closed on March 1, 1941. The last of the major San Anselmo railroad station buildings was razed in 1963, according to the town's timeline.
