After all, you must search for and enroll in a college that will provide the proper training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach assessing and contrasting schools so that you can make the ideal selection? Many aspiring students begin their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their residences. After they have identified some nearby schools, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final selection. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the different responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Job of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many functions that they can perform within the Glen Haven CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Glen Haven CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared with assistants and generally acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated functions, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Glen Haven CO area research facilities also.

Online Veterinarian Programs

attending vet tech school online in Glen Haven COAn approach that might be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Glen Haven CO veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for example for commuting and study supplies, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Colorado as well as across the Country, you must ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Glen Haven CO veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the vet assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for a number of Glen Haven CO vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Glen Haven CO vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Glen Haven CO vet community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate could signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Glen Haven CO program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Glen Haven CO programs you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you must confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Glen Haven CO college is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the Colorado veterinarian schools you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Glen Haven CO prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family issues. You might discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your busy life.
