We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the varied roles of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Cripple Creek CO veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Cripple Creek CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Cripple Creek CO area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Cripple Creek COAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Cripple Creek CO veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for travel and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Training Programs

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Colorado and across the USA, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Cripple Creek CO veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet assistant or tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding review process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a precondition for employment for many Cripple Creek CO veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final pointer, call some Cripple Creek CO vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the schools you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local Cripple Creek CO vet community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician school can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A lower rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Cripple Creek CO program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Cripple Creek CO schools you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Cripple Creek CO college is located in or near a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the Colorado veterinary schools you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Cripple Creek CO prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your vet education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Cripple Creek CO

Cripple Creek, Colorado

The City of Cripple Creek is the Statutory City that is the county seat of Teller County, Colorado, United States.[8] The city population was 1,189 at the 2010 United States Census. Cripple Creek is a former gold mining camp located 44 miles (71 km) southwest of Colorado Springs near the base of Pikes Peak. The Cripple Creek Historic District, which received National Historic Landmark status in 1961, includes part or all of the city and the surrounding area. The city is now a part of the Colorado Springs, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area.

For many years Cripple Creek's high valley, at an elevation of 9,494 feet (2,894 m), was considered no more important than a cattle pasture. Many prospectors avoided the area after the Mount Pisgah hoax, a mini gold rush caused by salting (adding gold to worthless rock).[9]

On the 20th of October, 1890, Robert Miller "Bob" Womack discovered a rich ore and the last great Colorado gold rush began. Thousands of prospectors flocked to the region, and before long Winfield Scott Stratton located the famous Independence lode, one of the largest gold strikes in history. In three years, the population increased from five hundred to ten thousand by 1893. Although $500 million worth of gold ore was dug from Cripple Creek, Womack died penniless on 10 August 1909.[10]
