After all, you must search for and enroll in a school that will provide the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you go about analyzing and contrasting programs so that you can make the best choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their homes. When they have identified some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are important factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final decision. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied duties of vet assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Function of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your decision might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are a number of duties that they can perform within the Conley GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Conley GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex functions, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Conley GA area research facilities also.

Vet Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Conley GAAn alternative that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Conley GA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for traveling and study materials, may be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Georgia as well as across the USA, you need to ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Conley GA vet assistant and tech schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the vet technician or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for a number of Conley GA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you select must have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final pointer, get in touch with some Conley GA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Conley GA vet community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech program can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate could mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may signify that the Conley GA college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Conley GA programs you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary technician classes from work or home, you must confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Conley GA school is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you ascertain if the Georgia veterinarian schools you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Conley GA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
