After all, you have to locate and enroll in a program that will furnish the necessary training so that you can succeed as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you go about evaluating and contrasting colleges so that you can make the best selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their homes. When they have found some area schools, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Calistoga CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Calistoga CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complex tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex duties, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and basically perform the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Calistoga CA area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Calistoga CAAn option that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered via the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Calistoga CA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for example for commuting and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Colleges

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California as well as across the Country, you must ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Calistoga CA vet technician and assistant programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet assistant or technician school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is often a prerequisite for employment for many Calistoga CA vet practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Calistoga CA veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They may even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Calistoga CA veterinary community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech college can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A lower rate could mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the Calistoga CA school has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Calistoga CA schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already talked about location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your vet tech classes from home or work, you must make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Calistoga CA campus is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the California vet programs you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Calistoga CA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, sickness or family emergencies. You may find that an online college is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Calistoga CA

Calistoga, California

Calistoga is a city in Napa County, California, United States. During the 2010 census, the population was 5,155.

The Upper Napa Valley was once the home of a significant population of Indigenous People, called the Wappo during the Spanish colonial era of the late 18th century. With abundant oak trees providing acorns as a food staple and the natural hot springs as a healing ground Calistoga (Wappo: Nilektsonoma, "Chicken Hawk Place")[7] was the site of several villages. Following Mexican Independence, mission properties were secularized and disposed of by the Mexican government with much of the Napa Valley being partitioned into large ranchos in the 1830s and 1840s. The first Anglo settlers began arriving in the 1840s, with several taking up lands in the Calistoga area.

Samuel Brannan was the leader of a settlement expedition on the ship Brooklyn landing in Yerba Buena (San Francisco) in 1846. He published San Francisco's first English language newspaper, the California Star. Following the discovery of gold in Coloma, Brannan pursued many business ventures, which made him California’s first millionaire and became a leader in San Francisco's Committee of Vigilance. Fascinated by Calistoga’s natural hot springs, Brannan purchased more than 2,000 acres (8 km2) with the intent to develop a spa reminiscent of Saratoga Springs in New York. He is said[8] to have intended to say "I'll make this place the Saratoga of California," but to have in fact said "the Calistoga of Sarifornia".[9] His Hot Springs Resort surrounding Mt Lincoln with the Spa/Hotel located at what is now Indian Springs Resort, opened to California's rich and famous in 1862. In 1868 Brannan's Napa Valley Railroad Company's track was completed to Calistoga. This provided an easier travel option for ferry passengers making the journey from San Francisco. With the addition of railroad service, Calistoga became not only a destination, but also the transportation hub for the upper valley and a gateway to Lake and Sonoma Counties. A 6-meter diorama of this early Calistoga can be seen in the Sharpsteen Museum.
