The Responsibilities of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of duties that they can perform within the Red Rock AZ veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Red Rock AZ. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training in contrast to assistants and normally acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Red Rock AZ area research facilities also.

Online Vet Courses

attending vet tech school online in Red Rock AZAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are provided through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Red Rock AZ veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, for example for travel and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Arizona and across the USA, you need to ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Red Rock AZ veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that confirms you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for many Red Rock AZ veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arizona school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, call some Red Rock AZ veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the schools you are looking at have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local Red Rock AZ veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate could mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may signify that the Red Rock AZ school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Red Rock AZ schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you need to make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Red Rock AZ campus is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you find out if the Arizona veterinary programs you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near Red Rock AZ before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family issues. You might discover that an online program is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Red Rock AZ

Arizona State Route 179

State Route 179, also known as SR 179, the Red Rock Scenic Byway, a north–south state highway in Arizona, United States, running from Interstate 17 to SR 89A in Sedona. In 2006, the US Dept. of Transportation awarded SR 179 its highest designation within the National Scenic Byways Program: the All-American Road designation, due to the red rock and sandstone formations through which it travels along its 7.5-mile (12.1 km) length within the hills of the Coconino National Forest. The All-American Road designation also signifies to the travelling public that this is a road that is "a destination unto itself".

The southern terminus of SR 179 is at exit 298 off of I-17; the exit is about 15 miles (24 km) north of Camp Verde. SR 179 heads northwest from the interchange briefly before curving towards the north. It keeps this heading as it passes through the red rock area of the Village of Oak Creek on its way to Sedona, just a few miles north. As it enters the Sedona city limits, it roughly follows along the east bank of Oak Creek. It crosses the creek just before reaching its northern terminus at SR 89A.[1][2]

SR 179 originally continued south to Camp Verde. However, the southern section of the road was turned over to the National Forest Service for maintenance after the construction of I-17.
