The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final decision. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal factor will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Newberry FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Newberry FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved duties, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Newberry FL area research facilities also.

Vet Online Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Newberry FLAn approach that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using multiple methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Newberry FL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for example for traveling and study materials, can be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Florida and across the United States, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other important qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Newberry FL veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the veterinary technician or assistant school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of Newberry FL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Newberry FL vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Newberry FL veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician school can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A lower rate could suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Newberry FL college has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Newberry FL programs you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you need to make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Newberry FL campus is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Florida vet colleges you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Newberry FL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of sickness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online college is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Newberry FL

Newberry, Florida

Newberry is a city located on the southwest side of Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,950 at the 2010 census.[5]. The University of Florida estimates the city's population at 5,946 as of September 2016. Much of the city borders the neighboring Gilchrist County to the west. The current mayor is Jordan Marlowe.

Newberry developed as a mining town after phosphate was discovered in the western part of Alachua County in 1880s. In 1893, the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railway was extended southward from High Springs making Newberry a railroad town and trading center.[6]. A post office established in March 1894 was named Newton, but changed to Newberry in August of that year. In 1896 there were fourteen mines operating nearby, and the town had hotels, boarding houses and saloons to accommodate the area's transient and sometimes unruly population. The demand for phosphate ended abruptly in 1914 when war was declared against Germany, the principal customer for Newberry's phosphate. The community turned to agriculture and was particularly successful at producing watermelons. The Watermelon Festival, first held in 1946, continues to be an annual event. In 1987 Newberry's Historic District was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Newberry is located at 29°38′23″N 82°36′31″W / 29.639605°N 82.608715°W / 29.639605; -82.608715.[7]
