But just how do you tackle reviewing and comparing schools so that you can make the proper choice? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their homes. Once they have located some local schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation should be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate selection. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the varied duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main determiner will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many tasks that they can carry out within the Hugo CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Hugo CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex tasks, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared to assistants and typically obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Hugo CO area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Hugo COAn option that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Hugo CO veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for travel and study materials, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Colorado and across the Country, you must ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to select a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Hugo CO vet technician and assistant schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary tech or assistant program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Hugo CO vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final pointer, get in touch with some Hugo CO veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop relationships in the local Hugo CO veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech program may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A low rate may mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could indicate that the Hugo CO school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Hugo CO programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Hugo CO college is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the Colorado veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are offered near Hugo CO before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your vet education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Hugo CO

Hugo Chávez

Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías (Spanish: [ˈuɣo rafaˈel ˈtʃaβes ˈfɾi.as]; 28 July 1954 – 5 March 2013) was a Venezuelan politician and revolutionary who was President of Venezuela from 1999 to 2013. Chávez was also leader of the Fifth Republic Movement political party from its foundation in 1997 until 2007, when it merged with several other parties to form the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), which he led until 2012.

Born into a working-class family in Sabaneta, Barinas, Chávez became a career military officer, and after becoming dissatisfied with the Venezuelan political system based on the Puntofijo Pact,[1] he founded the clandestine Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200 (MBR-200) in the early 1980s. Chávez led the MBR-200 in an unsuccessful coup d'état against the Democratic Action government of President Carlos Andrés Pérez in 1992, for which he was imprisoned. Released from prison after two years, he founded a political party known as the Fifth Republic Movement and was elected President of Venezuela in 1998. He was re-elected in 2000 and again in 2006 with over 60% of the votes. After winning his fourth term as president in the October 2012 presidential election,[2] he was to be sworn in on 10 January 2013, but Venezuela's National Assembly postponed the inauguration to allow him time to recover from medical treatment in Cuba.[3] Suffering a return of the cancer originally diagnosed in June 2011, Chávez died in Caracas on 5 March 2013 at the age of 58.[4][5]

Following the adoption of a new constitution in 1999, Chávez focused on enacting social reforms as part of the Bolivarian Revolution, which is a type of socialist revolution. Using record-high oil revenues of the 2000s, his government nationalized key industries, created participatory democratic Communal Councils and implemented social programs known as the Bolivarian missions to expand access to food, housing, healthcare and education.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Venezuela received high oil profits in the mid-2000s,[15] resulting in temporary improvements in areas such as poverty, literacy, income equality and quality of life occurring primarily between 2003 and 2007,[7][15][16] though these gains started to reverse after 2012 and it has been argued that government policies did not address structural inequalities.[17] By the end of Chávez's presidency in the early 2010s, economic actions performed by his government during the preceding decade such as deficit spending[18][19][20][21][22] and price controls[23][24][25][26][27] proved to be unsustainable, with Venezuela's economy faltering while poverty,[7][15][28]inflation[29] and shortages in Venezuela increased. Chávez's presidency also saw significant increases in the country's murder rate[30][31][32][33] and continued corruption within the police force and government.[34][35] His use of enabling acts[36][37] and his government's use of Bolivarian propaganda was also controversial.[38][39][40][41]
