We have furnished several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the various duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Function of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are many jobs that they can perform within the Cocoa Beach FL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Cocoa Beach FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and normally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Cocoa Beach FL area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Cocoa Beach FLAn option that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Cocoa Beach FL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for example for commuting and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Florida and across the United States, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many potential students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other important qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Cocoa Beach FL veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for many Cocoa Beach FL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Cocoa Beach FL veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help build connections in the local Cocoa Beach FL veterinary community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant college can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate may indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the Cocoa Beach FL college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Cocoa Beach FL schools you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Cocoa Beach FL college is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the Florida veterinarian programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are available near Cocoa Beach FL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family issues. You might discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Cocoa Beach FL

Cocoa Beach, Florida

Cocoa Beach is a city in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 11,231 at the 2010 United States Census.[5] It is part of the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The first non-native settlement in the area was by a family of freed slaves following the American Civil War. In 1888, a group of men from Cocoa bought the entire tract of land, which went undeveloped until it was bought out in 1923 by a member of the group—Gus Edwards, Cocoa's city attorney. At that time, Edwards' total holdings included approximately 600 acres (240 ha), and he had stopped practicing law to devote all his efforts to developing the area.[6][7][8]

Prior to incorporation, the area was known as Oceanus.[9] The Town of Cocoa Beach was established on June 5, 1925. Cocoa Beach's first official meeting was held at the Cocoa Beach Casino on July 27, 1925, and adopted the City Seal.[10] Gus C. Edwards was elected [10] as mayor and served as a commissioner along with J.A. Haisten, and R.Z. Grabel. A little less than a month later, plans for a pier became official.
