But just how do you approach evaluating and comparing programs so that you can make the proper selection? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are close to their homes. Although expense and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the various roles of vet techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are a number of jobs that they can carry out within the Brentwood CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Brentwood CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and normally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years. So the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Brentwood CA area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Schools

attending vet tech school online in Brentwood CAAn option that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Brentwood CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, such as for traveling and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in California and across the USA, you must ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Brentwood CA veterinary technician and assistant schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary technician or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that confirms you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a requirement for employment for many Brentwood CA veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final pointer, contact some Brentwood CA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to get practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Brentwood CA vet community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A lower rate could suggest that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the Brentwood CA college has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Brentwood CA schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you need to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Brentwood CA school is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the California vet colleges you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Brentwood CA prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of work, sickness or family issues. You might discover that an online school is the best way to fit your vet education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Brentwood CA

Brentwood, California

Brentwood is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population is 51,481 as of 2010, an increase of 121 percent from 23,302 at the 2000 census.[8]

Brentwood began as a community in the late 19th century, and still is known throughout the Bay Area for its agricultural products, primarily its cherries, corn and peaches. Due to urban sprawl many of the old farms and orchards have been replaced by suburban developments since 1990. Brentwood is increasingly residential, with the rate of population growth in the triple digits during the 1990s and 69% from 2000 through 2005.

Brentwood was originally laid out on land donated from property owned by John Marsh, an East Contra Costa County pioneer who acquired Rancho Los Meganos, the land grant that Brentwood is built upon, in 1837 from Jose Noriega. Marsh was one of the wealthiest men in California and was instrumental in its becoming independent from Mexico and part of the United States. His letters extolling the potential for agriculture in California were published in newspapers throughout the East. They resulted in the first wagon trains to California. Marsh encouraged this, and allowed new arrivals to stay on his ranch until they could get settled. Rancho Los Meganos became the terminus of the California Trail.[9] Brentwood was named after Marsh's ancestral home, the town of Brentwood in the County of Essex, England.[10]
