The Responsibilities of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of functions that they can perform within the Blairsden-Graeagle CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Blairsden-Graeagle CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared with assistants and usually acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated functions, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Blairsden-Graeagle CA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Courses

attending vet tech school online in Blairsden-Graeagle CAAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Blairsden-Graeagle CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for instance for commuting and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California as well as across the USA, you must ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Blairsden-Graeagle CA vet assistant and tech schools that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that verifies you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is frequently a prerequisite for employment for many Blairsden-Graeagle CA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Blairsden-Graeagle CA vet clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Blairsden-Graeagle CA veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate may suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Blairsden-Graeagle CA school has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Blairsden-Graeagle CA colleges you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you have to make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Blairsden-Graeagle CA campus is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you find out if the California veterinarian colleges you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are available near Blairsden-Graeagle CA before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss as a result of sickness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online school is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your active life.

Graeagle, California

Graeagle is a census-designated place (CDP) located about 60 miles (97 km) from Reno, Nevada and 46 miles (74 km) from Truckee, California in Plumas County, California, United States. The population was 737 at the 2010 census, down from 831 at the 2000 census.

The town of Graeagle was founded in 1916,[3] as a lumber town,[4] and established a post office in 1919 with the moniker of Davies Mill.[5] It was named Graeagle after a naming contest to select a better name than "Davies' Mill;" the winning entry contracted "Grey Eagle Creek" to Graeagle.[6] This name may have some connection with Edward D Baker, the "Gray Eagle of Republicanism," who was in the mining region in 1856 while stumping the state for Frémont.[5]

Graeagle Lumber Company was owned by the California Fruit Exchange and employed hundreds in logging, lumber production and to manufacture box shook (boxes for picking and shipping fruit and vegetables) from the 1920s to the 1950s. Modernization closed the mill in 1956, the box factory in 1957 and the town was acquired by the West family in 1959.[7][8][9]
