But just how do you tackle analyzing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the right selection? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their residences. After they have found some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final choice. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the different duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Job of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Arcadia FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Arcadia FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared with assistants and normally acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved duties, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Arcadia FL area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Arcadia FLAn option that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Arcadia FL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for traveling and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Schools

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Florida and across the United States, you should ask some important questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other significant qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Arcadia FL veterinary assistant and tech schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for many Arcadia FL vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Arcadia FL vet clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Arcadia FL veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician college can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate might signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might indicate that the Arcadia FL college has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Arcadia FL schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you must confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Arcadia FL college is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online may be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you ascertain if the Florida veterinarian schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are available near Arcadia FL before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your vet education into your active life.
