We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the main determiner will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many duties that they can carry out within the Thompson CT veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Thompson CT. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared to assistants and typically earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Thompson CT area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Thompson CTAn option that may make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Thompson CT veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, such as for travel and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Connecticut and across the United States, you need to ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to choose a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Thompson CT veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a requirement for employment for a number of Thompson CT vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Connecticut school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Thompson CT veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the colleges you are considering have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop relationships in the local Thompson CT veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate could suggest that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Thompson CT school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Thompson CT schools you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Thompson CT campus is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes may be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Connecticut veterinarian programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Thompson CT prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family issues. You may find that an online school is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.
