Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of functions that they can perform within the Leesburg FL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Leesburg FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Leesburg FL area research facilities as well.

Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for instance for travel and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Florida as well as across the Country, you should ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other significant qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Leesburg FL veterinary technician and assistant programs that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet technician or assistant college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a prerequisite for employment for many Leesburg FL veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Leesburg FL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Leesburg FL vet community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate may indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Leesburg FL program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Leesburg FL colleges you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you must make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Leesburg FL school is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. Of course taking classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Florida vet colleges you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Leesburg FL prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online school is the best way to fit your vet training into your hectic life.
