After all, you need to search for and enroll in a school that will provide the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and contrasting programs so that you can make the ideal selection? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their residences. When they have located some local colleges, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your comparisons. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final selection. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the different duties of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the principal factor will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are many duties that they can perform within the Hartman CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Hartman CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training in contrast to assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complex duties, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Hartman CO area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Courses

attending vet tech school online in Hartman COAn alternative that may make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Hartman CO veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for commuting and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Colorado and across the United States, you should ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to enroll in a program that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Hartman CO vet assistant and technician schools that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet assistant or tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of Hartman CO vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations involving your specific schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Hartman CO veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local Hartman CO veterinary community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech program can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate might suggest that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Hartman CO school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Hartman CO schools you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to attend a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you must make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Hartman CO school is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking classes online may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the Colorado veterinarian programs you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Hartman CO before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family issues. You might find that an online school is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Hartman CO

Phil Hartman

Philip Edward Hartmann (September 24, 1948 – May 28, 1998), better known as Phil Hartman, was a Canadian-American actor, voice actor, comedian, screenwriter and graphic artist. Born in Brantford, Ontario, Hartman and his family moved to the United States in 1958. After graduating from California State University, Northridge, with a degree in graphic arts, he designed album covers for bands like Poco and America. Hartman joined the comedy group The Groundlings in 1975 and there helped comedian Paul Reubens develop his character Pee-wee Herman. Hartman co-wrote the screenplay for the film Pee-wee's Big Adventure and made recurring appearances as Captain Carl on Reubens' show Pee-wee's Playhouse.

Hartman garnered fame in 1986 when he joined the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. He won fame for his impressions, particularly of President Bill Clinton, and he stayed on the show for eight seasons. Given the moniker "The Glue" for his ability to hold the show together and help other cast members, Hartman won a Primetime Emmy Award for his SNL work in 1989. In 1995, after scrapping plans for his own variety show, he starred as Bill McNeal in the NBC sitcom NewsRadio. He had voice roles on The Simpsons, from seasons 2–10 as Lionel Hutz, Troy McClure, and others, and appeared in the films Houseguest, Sgt. Bilko, Jingle All the Way, Small Soldiers and the English dub of Kiki's Delivery Service.

Hartman had been divorced twice before he married Brynn Omdahl in 1987; the couple had two children together. However, their marriage was fractured, due in part to her drug use. On May 28, 1998, Brynn Hartman shot and killed Hartman while he slept in their Encino, Los Angeles home, then committed suicide several hours later. In the weeks following his death, Hartman was celebrated in a wave of tributes. Dan Snierson of Entertainment Weekly opined that Hartman was "the last person you'd expect to read about in lurid headlines in your morning paper [...] a decidedly regular guy, beloved by everyone he worked with".[1] Hartman was posthumously inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2012 and the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014.
