We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the various responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Function of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous tasks that they can perform within the French Gulch CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college near French Gulch CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared with assistants and typically obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or French Gulch CA area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in French Gulch CAAn alternative that may make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at a local French Gulch CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for example for commuting and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California and across the Country, you need to ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other important qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the French Gulch CA veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding review process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a requirement for employment for many French Gulch CA veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final recommendation, get in touch with some French Gulch CA veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local French Gulch CA veterinary community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate could mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the French Gulch CA school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the French Gulch CA programs you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you must make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the French Gulch CA college is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you ascertain if the California veterinary schools you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near French Gulch CA prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family issues. You might find that an online college is the best solution to fit your vet education into your busy life.
