After all, you must find and enroll in a school that will furnish the necessary training so that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach assessing and contrasting schools so that you can make the best choice? Many future students launch their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their homes. When they have identified some nearby schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be looked into also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate choice. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the different roles of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Armorel AR veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the standard vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Armorel AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex activities, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training in contrast to assistants and normally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved functions, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes four years. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Armorel AR area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Armorel ARAn approach that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Armorel AR veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, for instance for commuting and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Arkansas as well as across the USA, you should ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Armorel AR vet assistant and technician programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary tech or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Armorel AR vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final recommendation, call some Armorel AR veterinarians that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local Armorel AR veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate might mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might indicate that the Armorel AR college has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Armorel AR colleges you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you must make sure that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Armorel AR campus is located in or near a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the Arkansas vet colleges you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Armorel AR prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family responsibilities. You may find that an online school is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
